10 Things Tag

(Bonus fact: I love pretty hairstyles & pretty ornaments).

Soooo I was tagged to do this a loooooong time ago by Kassie (thanks so much, girl! :) ) and I'm fiiiiinally getting to it. xP

Rules:
1. List 10 things that make you happy. (Linking to them, sharing pictures, writing poems about them, telling jokes, etc. are all encouraged but not required.)
2. Tag 10 people who make you happy (and notify them of their tag).

So! Ten things that make me happy. :)

1. Talking with my friends. I love love love emailing, chatting, texting, FaceTiming, or Skyping my friends. That’s why I love blogs and social media so much!

2. Laughing. I love to laugh! I love to hear people laugh. I love to laugh with people. I love laughter.

3. Scottish folk songs. I love Scotland, to start with. I love the dialect. I love the drama and pathos of the songs, and their beauty and happiness. I don’t love all Scottish folk songs, but I love most. I love singing them and listening to people singing them. (I just love singing in general. I love hymns. Singing makes me happy—especially if I can sing with a good partner or accompanist. ;) )

4. Swinging. Swinging makes me feel so calm and serene. Perhaps it’s the quietness, or the wind, or that I have time to think... it’s always made me so happy.

5. Water! I love water. It’s beautiful, refreshing, satisfying. It sounds amazing. It’s fun to play in. I love listening to water in all forms... the rain, the lake, the river, the water pouring into my water bottle, the fountain... it’s all so different and yet so similar.

Bonus fact #2: I love looking at beautiful scenery. The trees and sky and grass and mountains and animals and everything. I particularly love the sky.

6. Stories. Hearing stories, reading stories, thinking up stories, writing stories... happy stories, true stories, sad stories, dramatic stories, mysterious stories, humorous stories, interesting stories, imaginative stories... I love stories.

7. Roses. I looooooove roses. All kinds, all colours. But pink & red roses will always be my favourites. <33
8. Hoop earrings. Earrings are my favourite piece of jewelry and I particularly love hoops. And even more particularly, golden hoops. I don't know why, but they just satisfy me. They're perfect and round and golden and thin and dainty and elegant... <33

9. The colour purple. I love purple. I also really love blue. I love those two colours and I love how the mix and pour into each other...
I read this book online and I soooo want a real copy because it is gorgeous!! Look at the purple & blue mixing😍 Take a look at these images to see what I'm talking about...

10. Swishy skirts! If you haven't noticed yet, I love beauty. And skirts are beautiful. The 1860s are my favourite clothing era... Just big poofy skirts make me happy, but lots of beautiful detailing can make me love it even harder.
*googles Civil War dresses*
JUST LOOK AT THIS BEAUTY!!!
I also absolutely love wedding dresses (though I hate when they're immodest) and pretty much any beautiful or fancy dress will make my heart happy if it's modest.

Ten people that make me happy... Most people I know have already been tagged for this, so if you want to do it (even in the comments!) go ahead and do it :)

8 Favourite Books I Read This Winter

Hello, everyone! Here I am with our seasonal book favourites. :) I didn't say last time, but this list only includes books I reviewed this season--not rereads that I didn't review. ;) As before mentioned, I borrowed some of these categories & this post idea from Kate Willis.

Romance ~
By “romance,” I mean a book that cannot stand if you take out the romance. Aaaaand for that, I say What Katy Did Next by Susan Coolidge. Such a sweet, gradual romance. <33 And the whole rest of the book is amazing. This is my favourite of the Katy books.
Fantasy ~

By “fantasy,” I mean books set in this world but in made-up countries or places. This month it was Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. This book is pure genius and pure humour. I have reread it many times, but each time I enjoy it as much as ever.

Historical Fiction ~
Ahhhh, there were so many good ones!!!! But the winner was The Dark House on the Moss by Constance Savery. Sooo good, guys. Sooo good. I'm so sad at how unknown it is!! It deserves better. Redemption, betrayal, forgiveness, true love, children, sibling relationships, a British captain, amazing names... such a good book, as always. :)

Nonfiction ~
Great Canadian Speeches by Dennis Gruending. This was such a good book! Highly recommended for any Canadian or anyone wanting to understand Canada better. I really appreciated seeing that unique, bird's-eye view of Canada.

Finish That Series ~
The Questions of War Series by Jesseca Wheaton. I've been wanting to reread books 1-2 since 2017. and when book 3 came out I desperately wanted to read it... and just as desperately didn't want to read it. I finally did... so good. Wow. Totally recommended for history buffs, WWII geeks, & fans of deep themes. History ~
Never Give In by Stephen Marshall. This one perhaps the best biography I ever read, next to Daniel Boone, Wilderness Scout. It is so good. I copied down so many quotes. Definitely a book to reread often and ponder on.
Comedy ~
Not Write Now by Kyle Robert Shultz. Oh my word. I got this book simply because it was free and had amazing reviews and was about writing. Then I read it all that evening. Brilliant. Helpful. And hilarious. xD

Classic ~
And we have a new category. ;) This category is for books that everyone knows about (or at least that I've heard about a lot) that were written before the 2000s... In this season's category we have A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. So, so good. <3
MG/Juvenile Fiction ~
Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. I've lost count of how many times I've read this book. It's timeless. So beautiful. So funny. So sweet. If you haven't read it yet... you're missing out so much.
Reread ~

Adventures & Adversities by Sarah Holman. I love this series so much, and this is the best book in it (next to it's prequel Admirable xP). So many good messages... and William. Such a wonderful character.

Mystery ~
The Lamplighter by Maria S. Cummins. This isn't a full-blown mystery, but it was my favourite book that had touches of mystery/suspense (besides Dark House). I really enjoyed it--it was very good and deep.

Contemporary ~
Tattered Wings by Kassie Angle. This was hands-down my favourite read of the season, next to my reread of Enemy Brothers. So good, you guys. Soldiers + police + dogs + humour + tears + brothers + friendships + heroes... <33 I have no words. Just go read it.

So, can you name any favourite books you read this winter??

It's So Classic | A Tag

Aaaaaand we have a random tag because I love tags. Like, a lot. So, I'm sorry if you don't. XP I found this tag on Mikayla’s blog and it looked so cool! I just had to do it. ;)

Rules: 1. Link your post to Rebellious Writing.
2. Answer the questions.
3. Tag at least 5 bloggers.

And now... let's get started!

What is one classic that hasn’t been made into a movie yet, but really needs to?
I don’t watch many movies. But I’m pretty sure this book hasn’t got a movie made about it. “Fighting the Flames” by R.M. Ballantyne. I love it soooooo much!! And it would be so exciting as a movie!

What draws you to classics?
The writing style. It is so old-fashioned and deep and well done and beautiful. We just don’t write books like that anymore.

What is an underrated classic?
“The Settlers in Canada” by Frederick Marryat. No one seems to know this book but it is a.m.a.z.i.n.g. So, so well written and so beautiful and so funny.

What is one classic that you didn’t expect to love, but ended up loving anyway?
I usually go into classics expecting to love them. So this is a tough question. *puts on thinking cap* *pulls it off 54 seconds later* The only one I can think of is “The New Treasure Seekers” by E. Nesbit. I wasn’t sure if I would love this one because I didn’t love the first book (though I did like & enjoy it a lot) and even the second one was a little too young for me. But I ended up enjoying it more than I expected.

What is your most favourite and least favourite classics?
*cries at how hard the question is* *clears up instantly realizing I have the answer to the first one* “Little Women” is my favourite classic. Hands down. 100%. My least favourite is... maybe “The House in the Mist” by Anna Katharine Green. It was just disappointing and depressing.

What is your favourite character from a classic?
Katy Carr from the What Katy Did Series is my favourite female character. She’s just soooo sweet and Godly and so much like me. And I love Lieutenant Worthington from the same series. (He’s not my favourite male character (#DymInglefordforever) but I love him and he’s amazing—manly, caring, kind, and perfect for *coughs and avoids a spoiler*).

What’s a popular classic that you felt wasn’t actually that great?
“Silas Marner.” Somehow I didn’t love it too much. It was kind of disappointing. I expected to love it and I didn’t. There was no character that I loved, and it was kind of drab... not particularly funny or beautiful or interesting. I intend to reread it, but I just don’t love it like I do most classics. Not now, anyways.

Who is your favorite classic author?
It's a tie between Susan Coolidge & Louisa May Alcott. I love their writing so much! It’s hilarious, beautiful, realistic, interesting, and true.

In your opinion, what makes a classic a classic?
A classic is a book written before 1920, in my opinion. (The Anne of Green Gables books are exceptions.) To me the word particularly relates to the period between 1810 and 1900. Because most of those books were deep, beautiful, well-written, with carefully crafted characters and plots. They still speak to us today. They are everlastingly beautiful. They are enduring. They are the books of "all time" instead of the books "of the hour."

Relating to newer books, what attributes does a book need to have in order to be worthy of the title “classic”?
"Newer books" here would mean books published after 1920. The Winnie the Pooh series, most of the Anne of Green Gables books (and some other L.M. Montgomery books), E.B. White's novels... those are classics. Why? Because they have the same attributes as the classics I have listed above. They made their way into that group by their sheer immortality. I think that's what it takes.... it needs to be everlastingly beautiful and speak to many people through the years.

And I tag...
Ryana Lynn, Kassie, Dessa, Rebekah Morris, & whoever else wants to do it!

February 2020 Wrap-Up

Hello, friends!

~ Happenings ~

// I went running errands with my sister Lissa. We'd just had a big snowstorm and we’re too short to see over the snowbanks! It was a fun ride. xD
(Snowbanks in Montreal)

    (Snowbanks at home)

// I reread allll the Emily Abbott books to get ready for the second season. I'M SO EXCITED. I'd forgotten how much I loved them & how good they were. Book 7 is scheduled to come out in March and I can't wait!!

// I did A LOT of blog prep. I've only got December + a bit of November left to do for OFBL, and for LBFJ I've got most of posts already decided on & need to write them up. It's a lot of work but it will be helpful, I think. And I like being prepared. ;D And I also majorly updated & formatted my Book pages on OFBL.

^^side note: as of March 2, I have 113 posts ready & scheduled for OFBL.

// I reread Constance Savery's “Reb & the Redcoats” with Mary, and enjoyed it so much, and picked up on a super cute & sweet thing, and remembered why I loved the book so much... its so goo

// I edited & rewrote a little of my short story (< 5,000 words) Just Allissa. I will be running through it one more time sometime this year and then I'll be publishing (aka putting the files in Dropbox for you all to access it) during September or October. :)
// You guys. I finally reached a major reading goal of mine. I finished the Questions of War series. Finally. I was so happy. But also so broken. ;)

// Talking of reading (I read an insane amount of books this month, even more than in January), I did a lot of reading. I reread Alice's Adventures in Wonderland + Through the Looking-Glass, Heidi, and many Indie books. I also started the Elsie Dinsmore series. As of March 2 I've just started Elsie's Womanhood. I'm really enjoying the books so far! I also finally restarted & finished A Tale of Two Cities... oh my heart. No book ever made me cry with joy hours after I finished it... except this one. Sydney Carton, people. So real. Such an amazing redemption. <33
    ^^My friends know me well....

// ALSO. I RECEIVED A SIGNED COPY OFFFFF....
AHHHHH!!! I was so happy. This is one of my top 10 Favourite Indie books and one I was really implicated in AND I HAVE A SIGNED COPY!!! No one ever sends Canadian readers signed copies. I'm so happy. ;D
// I took some very complex (at least for me) bookstagram pictures. And I also participated in the #IndieLove20 challenge & spotlighted an Indie Author book every day except Sunday on my bookstagram. It was so fun!! I also got a story of theme for a while, which made me happy...

// We had doughnuts for breakfast one morning. That was unexpected and so nice. :)
// I also published my 100th post on this blog!!! It was the one on Rejecting Prejudice--very fitting, I think, because it's a topic I believe deeply in & think often about, and also this blog is a place for me to talk about deep stuff like that.
// I looked through some old videos on my phone & just soaked in the scenery. I miss summer so much!!! Thank God it's almost April--which means spring will start coming. But I'm also trying to be content in the season I'm in. :)

// Little joys... I learned how to change colours on Instagram stories and how to get the degrees symbol!! XD And the colours changed on my IG chats for one account and I LOVE THEM.
// I listened to my (Scottish) folk song playlist again. I had stopped for a time because my earphones broke (yes, I know, again. I DON’T KNOW WHY MY EARPHONES BREAK SO MUCH. Though a little sibling did help these along. 😏 I’m trying extra hard to be extra careful with these.) Anyways. Now I’m listening to my folksong playlist & my hymns playlist and I’m falling in love all over again... I love these songs & these hymns so. very. much. I also discovered Rule, Brittania which I have heard a lot of but never listened to. It was like finally meeting an old friend... and I'm in love. IT'S SO BRITISH. <33 and the tune!! Oh, and The Minstrel Boy, too. Love it so much!!!

Rule, Britannia!
Britannia, rule the waves.
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.

^^the chorus is my favourite part!! <33
As for The Minstrel Boy, I love the whole thing :D

// I finally write down some quotes from Sheffey that I had marked down & now I want to rewatch it...

// I think I finally nailed the getting up early thing... XD But it's still harddddd... Now that I have 6:00 rising down I'm aiming for 5:00 rising!
// A used the Rain Rain app constantly and created some amazing mixes. ;D
// I did A LOT of this This or That thing. It’s sooo much fun. Bet my followers were properly sick of me though. XD I also did some 3-things-about-me and recommended books of specific genres!

// My mother has discovered this amazing math program & she's been doing it with my younger siblings and she's been encouraging me over & over to do it because she thinks it would really help me (I'm horrible at math and can barely do mental addition.) So I finally started. Due to the craziness of the end of this month I didn't do much. But already I love it!
// And speaking of math, this happened...
// I reread Enemy Brothers again. ;D This time I Buddy-Read it with Kassie. It felt so good to be once more in that book. It always helps to make me feel calm & at peace--it's home. It's comfortable. I chatted it over with Kassie & with Mary (guys, we talk of SO. MANY. THINGS--and we really talk of crazy stuff--but no matter what we start with we usually end up back on EB. Honestly) and I also journaled my way through reading it. I'm planning a post with a tour of my EB journal and my notes on EB, so stayed tuned for that. :) We also used the Reading Guide which Mary & I created, which was super fun. And I found plenty of stuff to fix. XP

// I started adding more stuff to the wall above my desk! My word of the year, my hymn of the year, my verses of the year, & my quote of the year, + two lists of productivity tips & some verses I'm memorizing. I love it!
// I finally dug out an old WIP called The Tangled Web (and confused everyone by calling it TW so now I call it T.Web xP) It's a historical fiction mystery, and so I decide that I was going to throughly outline it before I started wiring on it again. I'm also doing a TON of research because I want it to be as accurate as possible. And I'm having so much fun.

^^Researching shipwrecks in 1833 was the coolest thing ever. Just sayin'.

^^You know you're an author when you spend hours researching the perfect illness for your character. Let me tell you, now I know why so many people died in the 19th century.
// I'm so happy with my hair!! MONAT is making it so nice. <33
// I had a lot of fun posting pictures & pairing them quite poems or quotes. :)

// I painted my nails. I'm trying hard tomato them grow and that's one way to keep from chewing them. And nail polish just makes me so happy. Unfortunately, two years ago I developed an allergic reaction to nailpolish and so I quit wearing it. In December I tried wearing basecoat/topcoat and that gave me no problems, so this month I tried the whole kit & caboodle. I still had a reaction, but it wasn't too bad, so I will probably start painting my nails again--and I'm so glad!! I also FINALLY have some nails and I'm jubilating. Only they break easily because they're so weak.
I swear that's progress...
// I tried out the screen time thing on my phone that keep me off apps during certain hours. I can't get it to work for my particular schedule and it's driving me crazy XD but it's also really helpful so I'm keeping it on.
// After looking through my mother's library I decide to add my name and the date I got it to my books. So far I've only done EB, lol, but I plan to do the rest too. :)
// I now have 6 journals. My EB one (in which I transcribe reflections about EB), my 5-year diary (because it's cool to see how things change over 5 years), my regular diary (because I have way more stuff to say than I have room for in the 5-year one), my church journal (for sermon notes, which I'm not very good at because I often forget my pen), my devotions journal, and my reading journal (which I am really enjoying). XP
// Random....
^^ Found this out by accident while researching T. Web!
^^ Too accurate.

^^This. <33 My Heavenly Father never ceases to amaze me.
    ^^Bet you didn't know that.

^^ Patterns are so important to me.
^^In case you forgot, spiders freak me out.
^^I have a thing for poetry, if you haven't noticed.
^^This quote. Oh my word. Hit me like a brick. I can't ask or seek to grow & not be watered or stretched.
^^PSA in case anyone was interested. XP
    ^^My writing prayer. <33

^^It wouldn't be a Wrap-Up post without some of these texts, would it? xP

    ^^ #nowordsneeded
^^ THIS. This is one of my favourite hymns ever. <33
    ^^ Ahem, yeah....
^^Still working on this one, so if you'd like to write in any assumptions about me, I'd be so grateful!
^^Remembered this by accident, looked it up, & fell in love again...
    ^^This was fun!!!
^^For some reason I did a lot of random facts about me this month...
^^Did I mention that spider creep me out??
^^I'm glad I'm not the only one.
^^This filter is so extreme but I love it. xP
    ^^TATTERED WINGS RELEASED & I'M SO HAPPY.
^^So glad I finished before March!!
    ^^This is so creepily true...
    ^^ ALL. THE. TIME.
